QualityLogic has announced that V1.0 of the IEEE 2030.5 (SEP 2) Test Tool Suite began shipping on May 29. The new release includes Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and DER Program (DERP) tests for the Ad Hoc Testers, which are shipping ahead of schedule due to demand for the final tests for ongoing development work. The Flow Reservation tests are in development and will be added to the released code base in June.

IEEE 2030.5 is an application-only layer designed to work with any underlying communication protocol supporting TCP/IP, such as ZigBee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HomePlug. The standard has been adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers as the interface standard between utilities/grid operations and Electric Vehicle charging systems to integrate EVs better into grid operations. It is also being considered for adoption as the interface standard between utilities and emerging “smart” inverters that will integrate renewable energy, electric vehicles and other distributed energy resources (DER) into grid operations. SEP 2 has been identified for adoption as an official standard in at least two countries for energy management communications within residential buildings and between such buildings and utility operations.

The V1.0 Release includes all of the certification tests as defined by the Consortium for SEP 2 Interoperability (CSEP) and also enables much more testing than is required for certification. Designed for development, these test tools and can greatly reduce the time and effort that would otherwise be required to develop and maintain a comparable set of SEP 2 development test tools.

In the V1.0 release, the full list of immediate control and curve-based controls is supported by the DER server (Client Tester), and the user can specify values for these DER controls using a simple-to-use GUI. In addition, xmdns subtype query support has been added for the DERP function set. The Functional Test Suite (FTS) has also been updated to deal with a UTC format issue that impacted Demand Response Load Control functions.

QualityLogic will be showing the SEP 2 Test Suite at the upcoming IEEE 2030.5 (SEP 2) Symposium/Expo on June 30 at EPRI in Palo Alto. QualityLogic will be working with vendors to assess conformance of their products to the IEEE standard and interoperability with other products.
