1547.1 Is Real and The Line Is Forming for UL 1741 SB Certification

Mandating the inclusion of a local, standard communications interface promises a quantum leap in making DERs easy to manage for grid operators. Because of the upcoming UL 1741 SB Revision (clarifying testing in IEEE 1547.1-2020), the actual requirement for certification is still in regulatory negotiation. Whether UL 1741 SB certification is required by January 1, 2022, or September 1, 2022, there are more than 50 vendors with hundreds of inverter families likely to seek UL 1741 SB certification in the next year or so. At about 10 weeks of testing each, there is a potential for an expensive industry bottleneck in certifications. QualityLogic 1547.1 Test Tools

QualityLogic has developed IEEE 1547.1/UL 1741 SB test tools that allow teams to successfully create and validate IEEE 1547.1/UL 1741 SB conformance. These tools are in use by the leading NRTLs for advanced inverter testing: UL, Intertek, TUV, CSA, and SGS. Leading inverter manufacturers have already chosen to use the QualityLogic tools for internal testing for IEEE 1547.1 conformance and pre-testing for UL 1741 SB certification.

Our new 1547.1 test tools were initially developed to implement IEEE 1547.1 Section 6 Interoperability testing using one of three standard communication protocols – IEEE 2030.5, Sunpec Modbus, or DNP3. In the development process, we added support for Section 5 Type testing using all three protocols and management of the test equipment required for the UL 1741 SB testing.

The IEEE 1547.1 Test Tool enables manufacturers to:

  • Conduct IEEE 1547.1 Section 6 Interoperability Testing in all three protocols.
  • Conduct IEEE 1547.1 Section 5 Type Testing in all three protocols.
  • Automate the management of the test equipment environment consisting of power analyzers or oscilloscopes and the grid AC and DC emulators to further automate the process of UL 1741 SB testing and analysis. We continue to add support for new test lab equipment based on the customer requirements.
  • Integrate the Test Tool into current testing environments through a rest API.

The benefit to inverter manufacturers is that they can use the same QualityLogic tools for internal testing and pre-certification that the NRTLs are using for their certification testing.
