The software testing industry continues to move at a breakneck pace as developers are shipping faster than ever before, while the QA sector has been hit by layoffs. QA teams are being asked to automate testing using AI agents that are still proving their worth.

Spring conference season is in full swing. Here’s what’s coming up:
- STAREAST: April 26 – May 1 (Orlando, FL): One of the longest-running software testing conferences. This year features over 75 talks across testing techniques, leadership, and strategy with a massive focus on AI and automation.
- PNSQC 2026: October 12 – 14 (Portland, OR): The Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference is the only peer-reviewed QA conference in the U.S. The call for papers is open until May 4.
- SeleniumConf 2026: May 6 – 8 (Valencia, Spain): The official Selenium conference. Expect deep technical talks on browser automation and the future of web testing.
- QA Financial E-commerce Forum: May 12 (New York, NY): A targeted forum focusing on quality assurance and testing strategies specifically for e-commerce and financial platforms.

DOJ Extends Title II Accessibility Compliance Deadlines
On April 20, the Department of Justice published an Interim Final Rule in the Federal Register shifting the ADA Title II web accessibility compliance deadlines forward by exactly one year. Governments and special districts with populations over 50,000 now have until April 26, 2027, to comply, while those with under 50,000 residents have until April 26, 2028. If your team is currently scrambling to audit and remediate public sector web portals, you just got a lucky opportunity to take a step back and consider how you can develop solutions that work for the long haul. We encourage organizations not to take their foot off the pedal, but to stop prioritizing conformance by particular dates and instead think about what they can do to make sure their digital offerings are available for as many people as possible as a matter of everyday business.
Navigating the Shift to AI-Driven Testing
If you have opened up LinkedIn lately, you know that everyone is talking about AI testing agents. But moving from traditional test automation to AI-driven testing is not a single path. Four distinct strategies have started to emerge.
- Extending existing test suites through AI. GenAI writes tests on top of your existing Selenium or Playwright suites. Teams get to stay in their comfort zone using familiar tools. The catch is that AI often writes brittle, overly generic code, which does not scale cleanly or address many points of human failure. This creates massive verification debt when human testers are forced to maintain scripts they never wrote.
- AI-upgraded frameworks. Teams write tests directly on top of AI-native frameworks like Vibium or PlaywrightAI agents. These tools boast self-healing capabilities and natively understand application context, plus custom AI-based pipelines can be integrated to achieve greater coverage. The tradeoff is severe vendor lock-in, high maintenance costs, and growing pains for teams accustomed to more traditional environments.
- AI-first testing platforms. Tools like testers.ai offer native features that change the workflow entirely. You get autonomous execution, speed, increased coverage, and cost savings. They come with intuitive features out-of-the-box that feel pretty futuristic, like automatically built AI prompts, which you can then copy and paste into your LLM of choice. These solutions enable incredibly fast exploratory testing with almost zero setup but can lack the deep integration required for complex CI/CD pipelines, and they cannot cleanly handle a lot of edge cases.
- The blended approach. The most effective strategy we see involves engineers, and sometimes third-party teams, combining these methods. This approach uses advanced custom tooling, AI-augmented development, AI-assisted reviews, and human engineers to provide speed while keeping human oversight exactly where it belongs. We think it is the best combination that exists (for now).
Successful practices are using all of these techniques in tandem.
Testing What AI Builds (The “Vibe Code” Problem) Continued
We touched on the concept of vibe coding late last year, but the trend has completely taken over software development and has a direct bearing on the quality of software overall. Developers are leaning heavily on tools like Cursor, Codex, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot to generate massive amounts of code at record speed.
The problem? They often do not fully understand the code they are committing. Sure, they start out trying to. Then somewhere along the way deadlines stack up, time begins to shrink, and the code generators feel like the only real option. At this point the code gets written, developers vibe with it, see that the happy path works, and ship it.
This creates an enormous bottleneck for quality assurance. The importance of the tester is magnified tenfold when the original author cannot confidently explain the underlying logic. AI-generated code might look structurally sound, but without rigorous boundary testing, it introduces subtle, cascading failures. Of course, this is nothing new. However, a few developments this month put it back on our radar.
We got a perfect demonstration of the risks when a financial firm laid off their twelve-person QA department. A month later, an erroneous discount code set all product prices to $0, causing a $6 million loss in revenue before someone finally noticed and did something about it (source). The fun part is that (a) this $6 million revenue loss fails to take into account the time and resources spent on the postmortem and bad press, and (b) a broken discount code is an incredibly obvious thing to get wrong. Now think of the things that are not headline-worthy, are harder to track down, and that continue to steadily chip away at a user’s experience. It’s a death by a thousand cuts.
Similarly, a Redditor on r/SaaS captured the same dynamic: The AI replaced half our QA team. Then we had the buggiest quarter in company history.
“We got swept up in the AI automation wave. Cut QA team from 8 to 4. Implemented AI-powered testing that promised equivalent coverage at lower headcount. Quarter results: highest bug rate we’d ever shipped. Customer escalations tripled. Two enterprise customers demanded emergency security reviews.”
And then there was the Claude Code source code leak. In short, a 59.8MB .map file was mistakenly included in the Claude Code NPM package, which provided public access to over 500,000 lines of code powering Anthropic’s coding agent, which currently generates around $2.5 billion in revenue. The above link has all the details. However, one of the biggest takeaways that drives our point home comes directly from the head of Claude Code (Boris Cherny) who said that “100% of my contributions to Claude Code were written by Claude Code.”
If the people who build the agents and presumably have the greatest level of knowledge on how they work manage to make this mistake, no one is immune.
QA teams must adapt by treating AI-generated code as inherently untrusted and questioning everything. The new reality is clear. AI might be writing the software, but human-led quality assurance is the only thing keeping it from being leaked to (or breaking in) production.
