The Complexities of V2G Certification and Testing

Bidirectional power is the most complex distributed energy resource integration the industry has taken on. Your vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system has to move power in both directions, perform grid-support behavior under abnormal conditions, and negotiate all of it across a communications stack that is still being matured.

QualityLogic develops the leading grid-code and DER protocol test tools used by companies and NRTLs around the world for IEEE 1547.1/UL 1741 SB and EN 50549 certification testing. We are part of the efforts shaping the V2G standards and interoperability as they are developed. We help your team put those tools to work during development, while there is still time to act on what they find.

Start With Where the Inverter Sits

The location of the bidirectional inverter determines which device carries the grid-support obligation, and therefore where the grid behavior must be tested. That single architectural fact drives your standards selection, your test lab design and your budget.

  • V2G-DC — The inverter is in the charging station. Test the bidirectional EVSE’s grid behavior and its communications. Explore UL 1741 SB testing for US programs and EN 50549 testing for European target markets.
  • V2G-AC — The inverter is in the vehicle. Validate the vehicle’s grid-support functions and the EVSE’s authorization, supervision and communications. Plan the US testing path around SAE J3072 and UL 1741 SC and the EU path around ISO 5474-2 Ed 2 and IEC 61851-1 Ed 4.

QualityLogic accelerates V2G implementations, conformance to standards and interoperability. We start with the standards, many of which we help develop, and automate the testing. Our software tools have become the de facto standard for the global DER industry. Not only do they accelerate implementation, they standardize the interpretation of the standards to further interoperability.

Software that Integrates the V2G testbed into a single system

A key benefit of the V2G test system software is the automation of all aspects of certification testing for communications and functional conformance.  The software controls the test bed equipment including the grid simulator, power analyzer/oscilloscope, DC power supply and the unit under test – EVSE and/or EV – and simulations of conformant V2G EVSEs and EVs, when needed.

A Test Orchestrator that Saves Time and Resources

The software orchestrates all the components to run hundreds of certification tests and analyze the results.  This reduces the total testing time and costs by up to 75% and enables accelerated discovery of issues, fixing them and retesting before sending the system to be certified to a formal test lab.

Build on established tools and expertise

QualityLogic’s IEEE 1547.1, UL 1741 SB and EN 50549 test tools support grid-code testing today. Our protocol conformance and interop test suites support the published IEEE 1547 and emerging V2G standards. For programs that automate the full sequence using QualityLogic’s IEEE 1547.1 grid-code test solution,  communications and type testing time is reduced from 4 to 5 weeks to as little as 32 hours.

V2G-AC Specific Enhancements

Because of our involvement in the development of the US V2G-AC standards and Task53, we are already at work on enhancements to support the certification testing of these complex standards.  We are not starting from scratch – we can use much of our existing test system for the testing, most of which are variations on the DER IEEE 1547.1 certifications already supported.

Add charging interoperability to the plan

Use the QualityLogic CCS Analyzer to investigate supported EV–EVSE communication sessions. V2G interoperability only works if the charging systems are interoperable.  The QualityLogic tool supports analysis of DIN, ISO 15118-2 and -20 charging sessions.  The analysis doesn’t care if the power is charging the EV battery or being exported from it.  The charging analysis can illuminate issues with both.
