EV Charging at Station

Turn your V2G-AC requirements into a test plan

V2G-AC places the inverter in the vehicle and the grid interface at the charging station. Your program needs evidence that each device performs its role based on the new standards. QualityLogic helps you define the testing, equipment and communications needed to prepare for that evaluation.

Choose the device your team is developing

Start with the part of the system for which your team is accountable.

  • Bidirectional AC EVSE — Plan UL 1741 SC testing for export authorization, supervision, required grid behavior and communications to the vehicle and upstream system.
  • EV with an onboard inverter — Plan SAE J3072 validation, including the applicable IEEE 1547 grid-support behavior and EV–EVSE communications.

Align the certification route before building the lab

For the independent-device approach in the US, UL 1741 SC addresses the AC EVSE and SAE J3072 addresses the vehicle’s onboard grid-support inverter system. A matched-system route using the new UL 1741 Certification Requirement Decision may also be relevant. Confirm the route, evidence and acceptable product combinations with your test lab and target utility.

Test what happens when the system does not cooperate

The test environment must exercise both expected and adverse behavior. Depending on the device under test, that may require a controllable EV or EVSE simulator, grid simulation and coordinated measurement. A communications-only simulator cannot establish power-level conformance.

Bring a proven testing foundation into your program

QualityLogic’s grid-code tools provide a starting point for validation to the V2G standards. We are extending our current products with V2G-AC capabilities and working with partners on the required simulators. Ask us to map the currently available tools and the capabilities in development to your specific EV or EVSE test plan.

Plan European work against the applicable requirements

European V2G-AC programs combine communications, vehicle and EVSE requirements with national grid rules. ISO 15118-20 Amendment 1 adds AC DER communication services. It does not by itself establish grid-code compliance. EU standards under development cover the AC EVSE (ISO 5474 Ed 2) and the AC EV (ISO 5474 Ed 2). Contact us and we can discuss your target markets and applicable document editions before defining the test configuration.
