Now Includes Coverage of T.38 and V.34 Issues!

IIf you work in Engineering or QA on MFP terminal or telecom/VoIP products that have a fax component, or if you troubleshoot fax calls, don’t miss our next Fax Technology Class. Now, we’ve added coverage of T.38 and V.34 issues – see below for topics covered.

If you have a number of people to train in fax technology, contact us at info@qualitylogic.com about arranging a Fax Technology Class at your site.

Overview

This class is predicated on the expectation of a minimal level of T.30 knowledge and experience from the target audience. Its primary target audience is the engineering community who creates and services telecom and terminal equipment that conveys facsimile transmissions. It is also informative for anyone who must make design and/or marketing decisions about facsimile terminals or carrier equipment. The content is presented using a combination of white board drawings, PowerPoint slides and the use of the QualityLogic fax test tools.

T.30 Protocol

T.30 provides the grounding of the entire concept of facsimile transmissions. High return, deeply perceptive fax test projects require a modicum of T.30 knowledge on the part of the participating technical staff. This is especially true for effective use of tools such as those provided by QualityLogic during product development and verification.

Basic T.30 aspects covered in this class are:

  • T.30 implementation overview
  • The five phases of a T.30 call and their relationships
  • T.30 message exchange structures and paths
  • The nature and use of HDLC frames in fax calls
  • The significance of page data resolution and encoding
  • Common T.30 implementation operational problems
  • Testing and troubleshooting prototype network equipment and terminals

V.34 Implementation

The introduction of the V.34 modulation into facsimile transmission has placed an even greater responsibility on hardware design and telecom engineers to perceive, understand and correct protocol violations.

V.34 elements discussed are:

  • The structural changes V.34 has made on T.30 calls
  • Additional requirements that V.34 places on telecom systems
  • Full duplex control channel operation
  • New bandwidth requirements for high speed primary channel data

T.38 Internet Fax

Wide spread adoption of Internet use has begun to take over many communications areas that were the province of the PSTN. A sought after PSTN capability for IP communications is the ability to carry fax. However, facsimile is a thirty year old technology designed for a PSTN that no longer exists — not the switched packet architecture of the Internet.

The T.38 concepts reviewed are:

  • Distinctions between G3 fax and Real Time IP Fax
  • T.38 Standards Overview
  • FoIP Protocols and Structures
  • UDP Error Correction Methods
  • Practical Issues:  UDP vs. TCP
  • Implementation of the T.38 protocol in VoIP gateways
