Color printing has entered the mainstream and is a key growth area in the printing industry. Between increasingly sophisticated consumers using digital image technology and the rapid advances in the technology of printing color, you have to spend more and more time and money to ensure that your color printing solution is state-of-the-art.
Microsoft has released its latest edition of Windows Vista, Suite SP1 (Service Pack 1). The Suite SP1 version is expected to gain wider adoption than the original release, so it’s more important that ever to measure your devices against this standard.
The Microsoft XML Paper Specification (XPS) Color Test Suite consists of custom-developed XPS files and high-end graphics application files specifically designed to exercise color rendering paths using new technologies related to Microsoft’s Vista operating system, such as the XPS page description language, Windows Color System, and HD Photo.
The XPS Color Test Suite SP1 complements QualityLogic’s existing XPS test suites by providing color accuracy and reproduction focused test files specific to the XPS architecture and design. This advanced color test suite ensures that your XPS color implementation can meet the demanding scenarios seen in real-world situations.
Test Highlights
Vector Tests include a variety of XPS documents using Path figures with linear and radial gradient brushes and solid color brushes. These documents are created in RGB and CMYK format with associated ICC color profiles. For some of the test cases, an alternative image has been generated in PDF format to compare the color results against another document format.
- In/Out of Gamut Tests assess the color reproduction of colors that are both within and outside a printer’s color gamut. These files represent colors that are produced in typical desktop applications (e.g., PowerPoint) using the sRGB color space.
- Sample ICC/WCS Profiles are created to assist in assessing the use of these profiles with XPS documents. The profiles represent colors produced using simulated input devices (e.g., scanners, cameras), Reference Color Spaces (e.g., AdobeRGB, sRGB), and Output Devices (e.g. displays and printers).
Mixed Object Tests contain a number of vector and raster objects working with different color profiles on a single page. The specific documents highlight problems that can arise when two images or colors exhibit different color results, even though they should have the same color appearance when their respective associated color profiles are applied correctly.
- XPS Named Color Tests include test cases that use the Named Color Vector Color Syntax.
- Example Real-World Imagery helps to assess the color reproduction of an imaging system using a wide range of real world photographic imagery and synthetic test images such as blends, gradients and color patches. Included are images with: extended bit depth; different lighting conditions; various flesh tones; memory colors, such as blue sky, green foliage, fruits and neutral colors; high- or low-key scenes with subtle shadow and highlight detail; saturated colors; and high dynamic range (HDR) images that combine multiple exposures captured for shadow/midtone/highlight into a single scene.

- XPS and WCS Color Reproduction tests include color and neutral gradients and color steps using XPS solid color brush, linear gradient brush and radial gradient brush language commands. In addition to color test files written directly using XPS commands, an equivalent set of test images using an application format will be provided to compare your XPS processing path to the application’s print path.
