Functional Test Suite SP1
Microsoft has released its latest edition of Windows Vista SP1 (Service Pack 1). The SP1 version is expected to gain wider adoption than the original release, so it’s more important that ever to measure your devices against this standard.
Microsoft® XML Paper Specification (XPS) page description language specifies content and appearance of paginated documents. XPS supports a range of 8 and 16 bits per channel color spaces, including native support for a new color space called wcsRGB, N-Channels, named colors (such as Pantone) and alpha channel support.
XPS files can include glyphs, vector graphics and raster images, such as JPEG, TIFF and a new image file format called HD Photo (also know as WM Photo™). HD Photo is a file format for continuous-tone still images. It supports 8 to 32 bits per channel color with an industry leading high performance compression algorithm that is designed to outperform JPEG.
The HD Photo Functional Test Suite (FTS) SP1 provides a set of HD Photo files that exercise each of the HD Photo container and bitstream syntax elements that influence the behavior of an HD Photo decoder.
As Microsoft is distributing source code for both the encoder and decoder for HD Photo, it is reasonable to assume that the behavior of these codec elements will be the standard reference implementation for HD Photo. Therefore, the diversity of HD Photo files contained in the HD Photo FTS SP1 are constrained to those files that can be generated programmatically by modifying input parameters of the encoder and the characteristics of input file formats being encoded. Furthermore, the container and bitstream syntax elements of primary interest from a testing perspective will be those that influence the behavior of the reference decoder implementation.
Test Cases
The HD Photo FTS SP1 test cases include:
- HD Photo files in each of the 56 formats ranging from thumbnail to 8X10 sized images
- Over 500 HD Photo test images implemented across 65 test cases
- Tests for each of the HD Photo container tags
- Test cases covering each of the HD Photo characteristics that can be modified via the WIC interface and with the WMPEncApp encoder utility
- Tests for each of the fields defined in the HD Photo Image and Image Plane Headers
- A small group of tests covering HD Photo files with color profiles, metadata, and illegal syntax
Taken as a set, the test cases in this suite provide broad coverage of the diversity of HD Photo structure permutations likely to be generated by encoders.

HP Photo FTS SP1 Deliverables
- HD Photo FTS v1.1 User’s Guide – The overall user’s guide to the QualityLogic XPS FTS delivery and its contents.
- HD Photo FTS .xps files – This collection of .xps files is the central component of the HD Photo FTS product. These files encapsulate all of the HD Photo images that are described in the HD Photo FTS Test Specification. All HD Photo images are individual XPS parts in the XPS package. Both USLetter and A4 sized container files are included. An installer is included.
- HD Photo FTS Reference Hardcopy Output – This output is produced by QualityLogic using the Microsoft XPS Viewer (managed code). All of the printed output is produced using the print feature of the XPSViewer application using a GDI-based printer driver. These printouts are not screen shots.
- HD Photo FTS Test Specification – This document describes each test file and the test structure in detail.
- TestJob Sender - QualityLogic’s utility for submitting print ready files to an attached printer. TestJob Sender provides additional test operations options that can simplify and enhance the testing process, including scheduling, cycling power to the device under test, and measuring performance.
